An internationally respected educator and cardiothoracic radiologist, Claudio Silva, MD, MSc, is the Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs in the Radiology Department at Clinica Alemana de Santiago, Chile. He is also Professor of Radiology at the School of Medicine, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile, and an Adjunct Professor to the Radiology Department at Duke University.

In his role as vice-chair, Dr. Silva oversees radiology academic endeavors at Clinica Alemana de Santiago, including the Research Division, International Outreach, and the Residency and seven Fellowship Programs. He also supervises the incorporation of medical imaging topics into the Medical School curriculum at Universidad del Desarrollo.

“Dr. Silva has made extraordinary contributions to global radiology through his dedication to education, leadership and international collaboration. His work has helped expand access to high-quality radiologic training, particularly in Latin America, and has strengthened the global radiology community through initiatives like the RSNA Global Learning Centers,” said RSNA President, Umar Mahmood, MD, PhD. “His commitment to advancing cardiothoracic imaging and mentoring the next generation of radiologists reflects his enduring impact on radiology worldwide.”

Dr. Silva is currently the chair of the RSNA Outstanding Community Impact Award Committee and a member of the Annual Meeting Program Planning Chest Imaging Subcommittee. He previously served as the RSNA’s chair of the Committee on International Radiology Education (CIRE) that developed the RSNA Global Learning Centers (GLC). In this capacity, he was also a member of the International Advisory and Education Committee. Following his time as chair, he served as a faculty member to the GLC at Hospital Metropolitano in Quito, Ecuador. 

He currently serves as associate editor and international editorial board member for Radiology and is a reviewer for RadioGraphics and Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging. Serving as a reviewer for Radiology and RadioGraphics for almost 20 years, he received multiple Editor’s Recognition Awards before starting his editorial position in Radiology. Previously, he served as deputy editor for the RSNA Case Collection. He has also provided guidance for the development of RSNA Spotlight Courses around the globe, including the chest imaging course, “Nuevas Fronteras: Avances en Radiología del Tórax,” held in Santiago, Chile, where he served as Director.   

He is an editorial board member of the Journal of Thoracic Imaging, the official journal of the Society of Thoracic Radiology.  He is also a reviewer for European Radiology, the official journal for the European Society of Radiology.  He has served as the Scientific Director of the annual meeting of the Sociedad Chilena de Radiología (SOCHRADI) on four occasions.  He served as editor-in-chief of Revista Chilena de Radiología, the official journal of SOCHRADI.  Dr. Silva has authored 17 book chapters and authored or co-authored 102 peer-reviewed papers.

Dr. Silva received his medical degree from the School of Medicine Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile and completed his residency at the Hospital Clinico Universidad de Chile, also in Santiago.  He was a Derek Harwood-Nash fellow in Cardiothoracic Imaging at Duke University Medical School. He also has a master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the Universidad de La Frontera, Chile, and a master’s degree in Health Administration from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
