Priority Focus Area Topics

The R&E Foundation is proud to introduce new grant opportunities that have been expanded to better serve our mission and the current needs of our community.

The Foundation’s Board of Trustees has identified a set of priority focus areas for the 2026–27 grant cycle to ensure that funding is directed toward the most pressing and high-impact challenges in imaging science.

The following Priority Focus Area Topics were selected based on emerging trends, unmet clinical needs and opportunities for transformative innovation across the field:

  • Precision medicine: Theranostics
  • Imaging in vulnerable populations
  • Efficiencies in radiology and opportunities for improvement
  • Personalized care in pediatric imaging
  • Cybersecurity in radiology departments
  • Increasing access and efficiency: Doing more with less

While proposals aligned with the newly introduced priority focus areas are strongly encouraged, the R&E Foundation remains deeply committed to supporting grants across the full spectrum of radiologic science and education. In addition to the approved priority areas, we continue to welcome innovative projects that may fall outside these categories provided they align with our mission and meet funding criteria.

FAQs

Yes! We encourage applications for any project that supports our mission, whether it aligns with the current priority areas or not.
All proposals are evaluated on scientific merit. However, projects that align with Priority Focus Areas may be given special consideration due to their strategic relevance to the Foundation’s current goals. Funding levels for selected grants align with listed grant categories.
Priority areas are identified annually by the R&E Foundation's Board of Trustees. These selections are based on emerging trends in imaging science, unmet clinical needs and opportunities for high-impact innovation. Input from the research community and corporate partners also informs these decisions.
Yes, applicants may submit proposals to multiple grant types, provided each submission meets the eligibility criteria and is tailored to the specific goals of that grant category. Please note that only one application can be funded at a time.
Not at all. While alignment with a priority area may offer strategic advantages, all proposals are reviewed based on scientific merit, innovation and alignment with the Foundation’s mission.
During the application process, you’ll be asked whether your project aligns with one or more of the Board-approved priority areas. If yes, you’ll be prompted to select the relevant area(s) from a dropdown menu and briefly describe the connection.
No. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees reviews and updates priority areas annually to remain responsive to evolving needs in the field of imaging science.
Funded projects span a wide range—from early-stage exploratory research to applied clinical studies—provided they demonstrate innovation, scientific rigor and potential for impact in radiology and imaging science.
