Fátima Matute Teresa, MD

An internationally respected abdominal imager and researcher, Fátima Matute Teresa, MD is the Health Minister of the Government of the Community of Madrid.
In her role as health minister, Dr. Matute oversees more than 90,000 healthcare professionals, thirty-five hospitals, and 460 primary care centers, in addition to several emergency and public health care facilities throughout Madrid.

Her distinguished work in abdominal imaging and her commitment to advancing radiology education have made a lasting impact on the specialty,” said RSNA President, Umar Mahmood, MD, PhD. “As Health Minister of the Community of Madrid, she brings a radiologist’s precision and insight to the broader health care landscape, overseeing care for millions. RSNA is proud to honor Dr. Matute with the Gold Medal in recognition of her exceptional contributions to our field and her inspiring dedication to improving health on a national scale.”
In her previous roles, Dr. Matute specialized in abdominal imaging in the Department of Radiology at Hospital Clínico San Carlos de Madrid. She was also previously the director of imaging diagnostics at Health Diagnostico, Quiron Salud, a network of health centers throughout Spain.
A strong advocate for radiology training, she has provided medical education for trainees at Hospital Clínico San Carlos de Madrid as the head of studies in its School of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Technicians.
Dr. Matute is the current vice president of the Spanish Society of Safety, Management, and Quality (SEGECA), where she previously served as treasurer. She also serves at the director of education at the Inter-American College of Radiology (CIR) and is a member of the European Society of Radiology’s Quality, Safety and Standards Committee. She previously served as the chair of the RSNA Regional Committee for Europe. She also was general secretary of the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM), and a board member of the Federation of Spanish Scientific Medical Associations (FACME).
She is the editor and director of Proradio, a professional update program in radiology. She also is area editor of Management and Quality and reviewer of Radiología, the SERAM journal. She is the author of more than 17 book chapters.
Dr. Matute maintains membership in several radiologic societies, including RSNA, SERAM, ESR, CIR and SEGECA. She is also a member of the Spanish Society of Abdominal Imaging and the American Roentgen Ray Society.
She received her medical degree from Complutense University of Madrid and completed her residency at Hospital Clínico San Carlos de Madrid.
