Carlo Catalano, MD

A dedicated educator and researcher studying digital health innovations, Carlo Catalano, MD, is chair of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine and Radiology at Policlinico Umberto I, Sapienza University of Rome. He is also a professor of radiology at Sapienza University.
“Dr. Catalano’s visionary leadership in radiology education and digital health research has had a profound impact on the global radiology community,” said RSNA President, Umar Mahmood, MD, PhD. “Through his commitment to innovation and mentorship, he has shaped one of Europe’s most dynamic radiology training programs while advancing the frontiers of precision medicine through broad, multi-institutional collaborations.”
For more than a decade, Dr. Catalano has served as the director of the Radiology Training Program at Sapienza University, offering one of the largest training programs in Italy. He has developed the Department of Diagnostic Medicine and Radiology as an innovative hub in radiology subspecialties attracting medical students and residents from around the world.
In addition to his work educating medical students and residents, he leads research in digital health innovations, focusing on the integration of digital health data to develop precision medicine and digital and biological twins, to improve diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. His own research track record is in digital health related to cardiovascular and oncological diseases, for which he collaborates with numerous medical centers worldwide.
He manages the large EU research project, D3 4 Health, which stands for Digital Driven Diagnostics, prognostics and therapeutics for sustainable health care. This innovative health ecosystem, composed of 28 partners including public and private universities, research institutes and enterprises, carries out activities to enhance research on digital technologies in health care, through a data mining process, in order to improve diagnosis, monitoring and treatment.
Dr. Catalano is a former president of the European Society of Radiology (ESR). He currently serves as past-president and on the ESR Board of Directors. He served as Chair of the Educational Committee of the ESR, as the treasurer of the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology (ESCR) and is a co-founder of the European Working Group on MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS). He has served as Chair of the Italian Society of Cardiovascular Radiology. He also served as the chair of the Young Leaders Club for the International Society for Strategic Studies in Radiology (IS3R). He has also served as co-chair of the European Cancer Organization Digital Network.
He has authored or co-authored more than 500 papers, which have been cited over 13,000 times. He has authored numerous chapters and edited several books and is also a part of the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals.
He is an honorary member of radiologic societies, including the German Roentgen Society, the Society of Hungarian Radiologists, the Japan Radiological Society, the Chinese Society of Radiology and the Sociedade Paulista de Radiologia e Diagnostico por Imagem.
He received his medical degree from Sapienza University. He completed his residency at the University of L’Aquila, Italy and his fellowship in cardiac imaging and interventional radiology at Policlinico Umberto I.
