Birgit B. Ertl-Wagner, MD, PhD, is radiologist-in-chief of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She holds the Derek Harwood-Nash Chair in Medical Imaging and is senior associate scientist in the Neurosciences & Mental Health Program of the SickKids Research Institute. Dr. Ertl-Wagner is professor in the Department of Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Ertl-Wagner’s clinical interests lie in the field of pediatric neuroradiology, including tumor imaging, imaging of neuroinflammatory and metabolic disorders, neurovascular imaging, and head and neck imaging.  Her research is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach, with a focus on MRI, imaging-based AI and translation of research into clinical settings.

Dr. Ertl-Wagner has been involved in numerous professional societies for decades, including RSNA, the Canadian Association of Radiologists, the German Radiological Society, the European Society of Radiology, the American Society of Neuroradiology and the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology. Her contributions to RSNA have encompassed service as committee member, program planner and abstract reviewer. She is regularly listed among the leading neuroradiologists in Europe and North America.

The recipient of the RSNA William R. Eyler Editorial Fellowship in 2012, Dr. Ertl-Wagner has demonstrated dedication to scholarly publication through her work as a longstanding Deputy Editor for Radiology, senior consultant to the editor for Radiology and Radiology Advances, as well as service on the editorial board of several other highly respected international radiology journals.

Long recognized for her commitment to research, mentorship and education, Dr. Ertl-Wagner received the RSNA Honored Educator Award in 2023 and 2024. She serves on multiple committees of national and international scientific societies and has received many awards for her research and teaching.

Dr. Ertl-Wagner completed her medical degree, residency and fellowship training at Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich. She earned a Master of Health Business Administration at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. Dr. Ertl-Wagner’s postgraduate work also included a research fellowship with the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN).
