Medical Student Research Grant
The Medical Student Research Grant gives medical students the opportunity to gain research experience in medical imaging while they’re still in school. Grant recipients will define objectives, develop research skills and test hypotheses, all before choosing a residency program. Ultimately, this experience gives students a chance to consider academic radiology as a future career option.
At a Glance
Before Beginning Your Application
- Confirm your eligibility. You must be a full-time medical student at an accredited North American medical school and maintain RSNA membership in good standing. Medical students can join RSNA for free.
- Confirm institution location. Complete the project in a radiology, radiation oncology or nuclear medicine department at a North American educational institution. The host institution may differ from your medical school.
- Plan your time. Commit at least 8 to 10 weeks of full-time effort under a scientific advisor during personal or vacation time or while participating in an approved research elective.
- Confirm matching support. The sponsoring department must match the $3,000 stipend from the R&E Foundation. The $6,000 total supports the student stipend.
- Confirm program limits. You may only submit one grant application to the R&E Foundation per year (research or education grant), hold no concurrent grant from the R&E Foundation and must disclose overlapping support.
- Coordinate early. Confirm the scientific advisor and department match. Notify the department chair and grant administrator that signatures will be required.
- Review the Foundation's Priority Focus Areas. Consider how your proposal aligns with these topics. Proposals aligned with these areas are encouraged, but submissions addressing other important and innovative areas of international radiologic education are also welcome and will receive full consideration.

UIM Applicants
To attract the brightest young researchers to radiology, the R&E Foundation will award up to 10 additional grants for medical students who identify as minorities underrepresented in medicine (UIM).
The Association of American Medical Colleges defines UIM using the following criteria:
- Racial and ethnic populations who are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population
The R&E Foundation further defines UIM as:

Those who self-identify as a member of a racial or ethnic group
historically underrepresented in medicine, such as:
- African-American/Black
- Hispanic/Latino
- American Indian/Alaska Native
- Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
