Mentorship Shapes the Future of Radiology

Rachel Ivy

When Rachel Ivy, a 2025 RSNA Research Medical Student Grant recipient, began her work on fairness and bias in radiology AI, she brought a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to improving patient care. What she didn’t know then was that the year would become a landmark moment in her early research career. Ivy gained additional support from the Foundation earning the RSNA Trainee Research Prize in the Pediatric Imaging category, reflecting both the quality of her work and the strength of the mentorship environment supporting her.

At the center of that environment is Paul Yi, MD, a previous RSNA grant recipient who understands firsthand how early research funding can shape a career. Dr. Yi has long been committed to paying his experience forward, guiding students and trainees through the challenges and opportunities of radiology research. His mentorship has played a pivotal role in helping Ivy refine her research questions, build confidence in her approach, and navigate the scientific process with intention and curiosity. M

The Foundation’s grantee surveys show that more than 90% of past recipients go on to mentor the next generation, creating a cycle that strengthens the specialty and expands opportunities for emerging investigators. Dr. Yi is a clear example of this cycle in action. His guidance not only supports technical development but also nurtures the broader traits that shape an investigator’s identity: resilience, curiosity and a sense of belonging in the research community.

Ivy describes her gratitude for the opportunity and the support behind it:

“Your support allows me to pursue a project I deeply care about, and along the way learn how to be a better researcher so I can continue to contribute to this field. This opportunity not only fuels my passion for research, but also allows me to explore how to make an impact on the field of radiology.”

Ivy’s achievements this year underscore the power of mentorship rooted in experience and shared purpose. Together, she and Dr. Yi demonstrate how early funding, paired with strong guidance, helps build the next generation of radiology innovators.
