Writing level and plain language
Writing level
- Write at a 8th grade level to help balance the scientific content.
- For technical content, write at a 10-12th grade level.
- Avoid jargon and explain technical terms, if required.
- Keep sentences short with just a single focus.
- Check readability with the Hemingway app or another online readability tool.
Plain language
- Simple, clear writing:
- Is easy to understand.
- Communicates the message quickly.
- Aids in search engine optimization.
- Is respectful to non-English speakers.
- Keep writing conversational.
- Unless otherwise noted, spell out acronyms at first mention. (See the Medical terms and acronyms section for specifics.)
