Volunteer Spotlight: Rising to the Challenge: How Reviewers Secured the 2025 Grant Process

Every spring, the R&E Foundation fuels radiology's future by awarding grant funding to numerous researchers for their innovative projects. This vital funding wouldn't be possible without the tireless dedication of dozens of volunteer grant reviewers, whose time, talent, and expertise are instrumental. We are profoundly grateful for their exceptional commitment to this critical process.
The Foundation utilizes five NIH style study sections to review and score grant applications:
- Radiology Research Faculty Grant Study Section
- Radiology Research Trainee Grant Study Section
- Radiation Oncology Research Study Section
- Education Grant Study Section
- Medical Student Grant Review Panel
Each grant application is assigned to multiple reviewers with expertise in that specialty. These reviewers will spend time scoring and providing comments to applicants and scores are ultimately used by the Foundation Board of Trustees to determine which grants are funded.
"The expertise of our reviewers is absolutely essential to the success of the grant funding process,” Srini Tridandapani, MD, PhD, chair of the 2025 Grant Program Committee said. “We’re incredibly grateful for the time and expertise our reviewers dedicate each year. Our volunteers’ efforts are vital – they help us fund and drive forward the latest advances in radiology research through our grants program.”
In 2025, the review process needed more volunteers than ever to complete this essential task as we received a significant increase in applications. We want to extend our sincere thanks to each of these reviewers for making the work of the Foundation possible.
We are anticipating the number of applications to continue to rise for the 2026 grant cycle. In preparation to meet that need, we are looking for new volunteers to join our grant review process. If you would be interested in sharing your time to further the efforts of relevant and groundbreaking research, please complete the short-term volunteering application for the appropriate study section. You can apply for more than one study section if you wish!
The application process will reopen in October. Learn more.
