Chairman, New York, NY | The Society is managed by a Board of Directors including six elected directors, the President, and the President-Elect. Elections are held annually at the Society's annual meeting and scientific assembly. Each director serves a 6-year term. The chief executive officer of the Society is the Chairman of the Board of Directors, who ascends to that position in his or her 6th year of office. The newest member of the Board of Directors serves as member-at-large; all other directors hold functional cabinet positions before assuming the chairmanship. These functional cabinet positions are Liaison for Annual Meeting and Technology, Liaison for Education, Liaison for Publications and Communications, and Liaison for Science. The President carries the responsibility for external relations, and the President-Elect also serves as the Secretary-Treasurer and is responsible for assigned major projects. All programming is by committees whose members are appointed by the Board of Directors and are listed in this directory (see "Committees for 2008"). The Board of Directors adheres to guidelines of tenure for committee personnel to ensure periodic rotation. The Editors are also appointed by the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors employs an Executive Director, who through his staff is responsible for functions related to administrative services, publishing services, meeting services, financial management, informatics, computer services, continuing medical education, and research promotion. The strength of the Society lies in the careful appointment of committee persons for the varied assignments and in the broad participation of members in the educational activities.
