Liaison for Education, Indianapolis, IN
Valerie P. Jackson, M.D., an expert in breast imaging and radiology resident education, is the newest member of the RSNA Board of Directors. Dr. Jackson will serve as the Board Liaison for Education, replacing Richard L. Baron, M.D., who is assuming the position of Board Liaison for International Affairs.
"A lot of radiology organizations offer excellent education, but RSNA is on the leading edge," said Dr. Jackson, the Eugene C. Klatte Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. "It's the one place where you can get it all. RSNA is a leader in education."
Dr. Jackson said she is committed to upholding RSNA's reputation by helping the Society capitalize on digital education opportunities. "There is so much innovation going on right now—to be able to facilitate the integration of new technologies is really exciting."
Dr. Jackson is the author of approximately 100 peer-reviewed articles and 20 books and book chapters with an emphasis on breast imaging and radiologic education. She has served as principal investigator on numerous funded grants including several focused on radiologic education. A sought-after lecturer and educator who has made more than 300 scientific and education presentations at meetings worldwide, Dr. Jackson has been a co-presenter of the RSNA Faculty Development Workshop.
An RSNA member since 1982, Dr. Jackson has served the Society in numerous roles, including as chair of the Refresher Course Committee since 2009, chair of the Breast Imaging Subcommittee of the Scientific Program Committee from 2003 to 2006 and a member of the RSNA News Editorial Board from 2005 to 2008. She served RSNA as first vice-president from 2008 to 2009 and is a member of the RSNA Centennial Committee. Dr. Jackson also has been active on many committees of the RSNA Research & Education (R&E) Foundation and served on the R&E Foundation Board of Trustees from 2009 to 2012.
"I am thrilled to be able to serve RSNA on its Board of Directors," Dr. Jackson said. "RSNA has been instrumental in giving me opportunities throughout my career—it is the single organization that has enabled me to get to where I am today."
Dr. Jackson has served more than a dozen other radiologic and other medical societies over the past 20 years, including as president of the American College of Radiology (ACR), Indiana Radiological Society, Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiology Departments and Society of Breast Imaging (SBI). Dr. Jackson served on the board of trustees of the American Board of Radiology from 2001 to 2010. She has served in numerous special service positions with committees within her institution, statewide, nationally and globally and has been a faculty advisor to dozens of medical students. Dr. Jackson has served as a reviewer for numerous radiologic journals including Radiology, the American Journal of Roentgenology, Academic Radiology and Journal of the American College of Radiology.
The recipient of numerous honors throughout her career, Dr. Jackson is a fellow of the American College of Radiology and has received the gold medals of the Indiana Radiological Society, SBI and ACR. The Valerie P. Jackson Education Fellowship also recognizes her work with ACR. Dr. Jackson delivered the Annual Oration in Diagnostic Radiology, "Screening Mammography: Controversies and Headlines," at RSNA 2002.
