Panel A Axial T2-weighted MR image shows diffuse high signal intensity in the basal ganglia and left external capsule and claustrum region (arrows) with central areas (arrowheads) of low signal intensity. Panel B Coronal contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MR image shows focally enhancing areas (straight arrows) within larger areas of hypointensity (curved arrows) of the basal ganglia regions. Panel C Photograph of the coronally sliced autopsy specimen shows brownish discoloration within the basal ganglia regions bilaterally with mild midline shift. The left mass extends into the caudate head (arrow) and abuts the ependymal surface of the lateral ventricle (arrowhead).
