Figure 14: Primary CNS lymphoma in a 41-year-old man with AIDS and right hemiparesis. Panel A Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan shows multiple ring-enhancing masses (arrowheads) with surrounding edema located in the left thalamus, basal ganglia, and periventricular white matter of the left cerebral hemisphere. The ring enhancement is mildly irregular in appearance. Blood cultures were positive for Salmonella typhimurium, and the ring-enhancing masses were thought to be abscesses. The patient died 1 month later. Panel B Photograph of the coronally sectioned autopsy specimen shows a large necrotic mass (m) of the left putamen, globus pallidus, and caudate head with areas of hemorrhage. Note the enlargement of the surrounding white matter indicative of edema. Histologic findings confirmed the diagnosis of primary CNS lymphoma.
