Graph shows the results of selective arterial stimulation testing for an insulinoma within the head of the pancreas. Calcium was used as the secretagogue, and insulin levels in the right hepatic vein (r. hep) were monitored after calcium was injected into selected arteries (art). Marked elevation in the concentration of insulin is noted after injection of calcium into the superior mesenteric artery (sma) and gastroduodenal artery (gda). The mass is thus localized to the head of the pancreas. This technique is typically used to detect lesions that cannot be detected by other means.
