Figure 7: Meconium ileus with colonic and small bowel impaction. Panel A Image from the first attempt at a contrast material enema shows a typical microcolon. Multiple filling defects representing meconium are present in the descending colon and proximal transverse colon where the retrograde flow of contrast material terminates. Multiple gas-filled loops of dilated small bowel are distributed throughout the abdomen. Panel B Spot radiograph from a second enema attempt demonstrates opacification of the meconium-filled cecum (C) and appendix as well as retrograde flow into the meconium-impacted terminal ileum (I). The terminal ileum and cecum are similar in caliber, whereas the visualized portions of the fully opacified sigmoid (S) and transverse colon (T) are smaller.
