Figure 12: Fatty replacement of the pancreas due to CF. Panel A Photograph of the cut surface of the pancreas (autopsy specimen) shows marked replacement of glandular tissue by fat. Panel B Photomicrograph (original magnification, X4; H-E stain) shows a dilated duct (D) and a few remaining atrophic islets of glandular tissue (arrow) separated by extensive fat deposition. Panel C Photomicrograph (original magnification, X4; H-E stain) of another specimen shows extensive fibrosis and changes of chronic inflammation, dystrophic calcification (arrowheads), but less fat deposition. The round, eosinophilic area (arrow) represents mucous impaction within a small duct.
