Figure 13: Panel A Frozen hemithorax in a 68-year-old man with MPM and no history of asbestos exposure. PA radiograph shows the circumferential nodular pleural thickening encasing the right lung and markedly contracting the right hemithorax, causing development of a scoliosis concave to the right. The volume loss is manifested radiographically as narrowing of the intercostal spaces; however, there is relatively little shift of the mediastinum, a finding that indicates a frozen hemithorax. Panel B Mediastinal shift in a 73-year-old man with MPM. PA ra- diograph shows right-sided pleural masses that encase the lung. The mass effect created by the tumor growth displaces the mediastinum into the left hemithorax. A large, soft-tissue mass (arrowhead) in the right chest wall indicates chest wall invasion.
