Figure 30:
MPM in the right hemithorax of a 62-year-old man. Panel A Multiplanar axial T1-weighted (530/30) MR image at the level of the aorticopulmonary window shows the moderate signal intensity of a tumor that is causing right-sided, circumferential nodular pleural thickening and contraction of the hemithorax. The tumor has slightly higher signal intensity than that of skeletal muscle. Pretracheal lymphadenopathy (*) is also present. Panel B Axial T1-weighted (530/30) image at the level of the right pulmonary artery shows indistinctness of the interface between the tumor and the bone marrow, which has high signal intensity; this finding suggests anterior and lateral chest wall invasion (arrowheads). Panel C Coronal T1-weighted (566/30) image allows clear visualization of the early invasion of the right lateral chest wall. Mediastinal adenopathy (*), pleural effusion (E), and pericardial invasion (arrowhead) are clearly depicted. Panel D Sagittal T1-weighted (566/30) image shows anterior chest wall invasion (arrowhead) and hepatic invasion (arrows). The higher signal intensity of the tumor (T) can be clearly differentiated from the lower signal intensity of the pleural effusion (E). The right lower lobe (L) has completely collapsed.
