Figure 12:
Choriocarcinoma in a 31-year-old woman
(gravida 6, para 2032) with a positive pregnancy test. Panel A Sonogram obtained about 12 weeks after last menstrual period demonstrates a heterogeneous mass. The patient was treated with dilation and curettage for a molar pregnancy. Six months later, CT was performed
when she developed nausea and vomiting and was found to have a beta-hCG level of 721,500 mIU/mL (721,500 IU/L). Panel B Pelvic CT scan shows an enlarged uterus without a discrete mass. Panel C Chest CT scan shows multiple
pulmonary nodules, some of which are indicated by arrows. Panel D Hysterectomy specimen shows the central hemorrhagic mass (arrows). Panel
E Photomicrograph (original magnification, x400; H-E stain) shows the biphasic pattern of choriocarcinoma, including syncytiotrophoblasts (arrows) and cytotrophoblasts (C). Panel F Photomicrograph (original magnification, x100;
immunohistochemical stain for beta-hCG) of a specimen from a different patient shows reactivity in syncytiotrophoblasts, as indicated by the brown stain in the cytoplasm (arrows).
