Figure 11:
Choriocarcinoma arising from ectopic pregnancy (right fallopian tube) in a 22-year-old woman (gravida 1, para 0) with acute pelvic pain and a positive pregnancy test 12 weeks after last menstrual period. Panel A Longitudinal sonogram shows a large oval heterogeneous right adnexal mass (straight arrows) with ill-defined margins adjacent to the lower uterine segment. Curved arrow = anterior surface of the uterus. Preoperative and operative diagnosis was a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, but the histologic diagnosis was choriocarcinoma (no fetus was identified). Panel B Photomicrograph (original magnification, x100; H-E stain) shows hemorrhage and necrosis (arrows).
