Esophageal candidiasis in a 34-year-old man with AIDS with dysphagia and odynophagia. Panel A Double-contrast esophagogram shows longitudinally oriented, discrete filling defects of the proximal half of the esophagus. The intervening mucosa appears normal. Panel B Photomicrograph (original magnification, X180; periodic acid Schiff stain) of the biopsy specimen shows necrotic exudate that contains yeast cells and pseudohyphae of C albicans.
