Gastrointestinal diseases in AIDS patients differ from those in the general population in that they are usually caused by opportunistic infections or by one of two specific neoplasms. It is important to remember that the pathologic processes in these patients usually are multifocal and have multiple causes. Clinical and radiologic manifestations of many of these gastrointestinal diseases are nonspecific; definitive diagnoses must be made based on results of cultures or histopathologic analyses. Nevertheless, radiologic findings, interpreted in the context of the level of compromise of the immune system in the patient, may help guide clinicians to the presumptive diagnosis and treatment. Knowledgeable interpretation of imaging results may spare patients additional diagnostic and often invasive procedures.
