Figure 2: Villous adenoma. Panel A Image from a barium enema study demonstrates a large villous adenoma of the rectum harboring areas of invasive adenocarcinoma. Barium coats the multiple interstices and frondlike projections of its papillary growth pattern. Panel B Photograph of the corresponding gross specimen shows the macroscopic papillary growth pattern. Panel C CT scan of another patient demonstrates a large villous adenoma of the rectum. The areas of low attenuation correspond to collections of mucus within the interstices of the adenoma. Despite its large size, no carcinoma was demonstrated in this lesion.
