In conclusion, colorectal carcinoma is a common disease, the course of which may be markedly and favorably altered through screening. The radiologist, with use of the barium enema examination, should be instrumental in initiating and participating in screening protocols. Cross-sectional imaging is most useful in the evaluation of advanced disease, recurrent disease, and associated complications. It is clear that radiologists have the responsibility, opportunity, and ability to save lives by improving the detection rate of small adenomas of the colon and by popularizing colon screening with vigor equal to that applied to the screening of breast carcinoma with mammography (76).
