Continuous Quality Improvement Initiative

QI TRAINING & EDUCATION RESOURCES

The Quality Improvement Committee (QIC) is continually developing new radiology-specific training and education programs to support RSNA members and their team in facilitating practice assessment and quality improvement (QI). There are also several public and private national organizations and institutions that provide professionals with educational opportunities focused on general aspect of QI skills and quality leadership.

Quality Improvement Programs at RSNA 2008

QI Symposium

For the second year, the RSNA annual meeting offered two courses focusing on QI methods and concepts, and included examples of implementing radiology-specific projects. The Radiology Informatics Committee (RIC) held a course that looked at information technology's (IT) role in enabling radiologists and radiology professionals to provide safe, quality care to patients.

Each session in Tuesday’s QI program provided an opportunity to hear a series of speakers share their personal experiences on designing and implementing QI projects, illustrating tools used to conduct the project, and  resources to support the improvement initiative. Session Topics included:

§ Improvements to procedure and system processes
§ Assessing satisfaction at the peer, staff, and patient levels
§ Patient safety in the radiology suite, and
§ Individual performance measurement and assessment including peer review and theradiologist scorecard

The two-hour course on Wednesday looked at the next generation IT requirements for improving quality and safety for Radiology. Speakers used case examples to demonstrate how information technology tools are used to improve:

         § c
linical appropriateness
         § access to services
§ report quality and turnaround time
§ communication of critical test results

Quality Improvement Roundtable for Radiology

The QIC created the Quality Improvement Roundtable for Radiology in 2007 with the aim of fostering a culture of quality and safety in radiology through interactive exchange of information. The Roundtable offers radiologists and radiology professionals a forum to actively discuss issues, challenges, and successes of quality improvement (QI) projects in their practices.
