  • CERT-ain Success: First RSNA/ASNR CERT Program Completed

New training program seeks to grow interest in CER.

    August 24, 2017

In June, the RSNA wrapped up its inaugural Comparative Effectiveness Research Training (CERT) program. Ten students completed the interactive program, which the RSNA co-sponsored with the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR).

“Comparative effectiveness research is of growing importance in the imaging field,” said Pina C. Sanelli, MD, CERT program co-director. “The ultimate purpose of comparative effectiveness research is to provide data to help providers and consumers make informed decisions that will improve healthcare at the individual level and across the entire healthcare system.”

The RSNA/ASNR CERT program accepts applications from junior faculty and senior trainees in the imaging sciences and is comprised of a series of web-based lectures and small group discussions, along with an in-person workshop at RSNA headquarters. Participants learn how to identify and implement principles of CER design and how to comprehend regulatory and funding implementation issues associated with CER for imaging. The CERT program also has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

“Advanced imaging tests add cost to the nation's healthcare. CER is a tool to demonstrate how a diagnostic test or treatment leads to more efficient care, better treatment decisions and ultimately improved patient outcome as compared with other alternatives in a real world setting,” said Yoshimi Anzai, MD, CERT program co-director “It is critically important to train more radiologists to conduct CER in medical imaging.”

The RSNA would like to congratulate the 10 participants of the inaugural class of the RSNA/ASNR CERT Program:

    Rebecca Dumont Walter, MD
University of California at San Francisco
    Ruth Dunne, MB BCH, BAO
    Brigham and Women’s Hospital
    Nima Kokabi, MD
    Emory University
    Peter Kranz, MD
    Duke University Medical Center
    Cindy Lee, MD
    New York Langone Medical Center
    Ajay Malhotra,MD
    Yale University
    Lubdha Shah, MD
    University of Utah
    Jeffrey Shyu, MDMPH
Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School
    Premal Trivedi, MD, MSE
University of Colorado – Denver/Anschutz Medical Center
    Debra Yeboa, MD
University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center

CERT and other programs such as VOICE (Value of Imaging through Comparative Effectiveness), a collaborative training program in biomedical big data and comparative effectiveness research from the NYU Department of Radiology, are designed to address the education gaps in this relatively new research field.
