Stephen A. Feig, M.D., is a professor of radiology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and director of breast imaging at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Feig is nationally and internationally recognized for his leadership in clinical mammography, his accomplishments in breast imaging research and as an advocate of breast cancer screening. He is widely acknowledged for his pioneering research in many areas, including screening mammography guidelines and radiation risk, and remains active in mammography research today. He has been principal or co-principal investigator on 14 grant-supported research studies.
In 2003, Dr. Feig was honored with the Gold Medal Award from the Society of Breast Imaging for his leadership and contributions in the mammography field. In 2004, Dr. Feig was one of only two radiologists to be honored at the NBCAM National Summit, "20 Years of Breast Cancer Awareness, the People, the Progress, the Future."
Board-certified in radiology, Dr. Feig is a fellow in the American College of Radiology. He is a member of the committee on breast imaging and is past chairman of the committee on mammography accreditation. He has served as a member of the written examination committee and as a guest examiner on the American Board of Radiology. He is a member of the Radiological Society of North America and serves on the refresher course committee.
Dr. Feig is author or co-author of more than 280 published works including peer-reviewed articles and scientific papers, as well as 75 books or book chapters. Since 1975, he has presented more than 800 lectures and scientific exhibits around the world.
Dr. Feig is editor-in-chief of Seminars in Breast Disease and is a core editor of Breast Disease, A Yearbook Quarterly. He is also a reviewer for the American Journal of Roentgenology, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, Cancer, RadioGraphics, and Radiology.
Dr. Feig was one of six founders of the Society of Breast Imaging in 1985, for which he served as president from 1999-2001. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Breast Disease.
He serves on the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, as well as its Committee on Breast Imaging. He is a co-author of four NCRP Monographs on mammography radiation dose and radiation risk.
Dr. Feig received his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine and a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in New York. A major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he served as chief of radiology at the Army Hospital of Okinawa, Japan, 1971-1973.
