2008 Board of Directors:

N. Reed Dunnick, M.D.
Liaison for Science, Ann Arbor, MI

(From RSNA 2006 Daily Bulletin)

N. Reed Dunnick, M.D., is the newest member of the RSNA Board of Directors. Elected at RSNA 2006, Dr. Dunnick will serve as the liaison-designate for publications and communications.

He will work with the current liaison, Hedvig Hricak, M.D., Ph.D., until she becomes chair of the RSNA Board at the conclusion of RSNA 2007.

The liaison for publications and communications is active in providing guidance and advice on RSNA publications (including the peer-reviewed journals Radiology and RadioGraphics, RSNA News and the Daily Bulletin), marketing and advertising programs for the Society, communications with members and contact with the public through various media relations programs and the public information Web site, RadiologyInfo.org.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to RSNA’s many outstanding programs," said Dr. Dunnick, who is the Fred Jenner Hodges Professor and chair of the Department of Radiology at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. "RSNA brings together radiologists, radiation oncologists and imaging scientists for the largest professional radiology society meeting in the world. The series of research, educational and service opportunities RSNA provides is unsurpassed."

Dr. Dunnick has extensive experience with research. He is the founding president of the Radiology Research Alliance, is the recipient of several grants from the National Institutes of Health, and has investigated functional adrenal disease, hypertension, renal masses and the percutaneous approach to urolithiasis.

"It is through research that we are able to advance the field,” he said. "As imaging and image-guided therapeutic techniques become increasingly important to patient care, our responsibilities to innovate, improve and manage the field expand. There have been so many new discoveries—equipment, software programs, imaging and therapeutic techniques and improvements in patient safety—that I am excited about the role radiology and RSNA will play in the coming years."

Dr. Dunnick’s expertise in publications includes service on the editorial boards of 12 peer-reviewed journals, including Radiology, American Journal of Roentgenology, Journal of the American College of Radiology, Academic Radiology and Journal of Women’s Imaging.

He is the author of eight books, has contributed to 61 book chapters, is the author or co-author of nearly 300 articles in scientific journals and has been a presenter at more than 140 national medical meetings.

Dr. Dunnick has been an RSNA member since 1978 and is a longtime volunteer for many radiology organizations. He is currently the president of the Academy for Radiology Research, a trustee for the American Board of Radiology and president of the Association of University Radiologists. He is also past-president of the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), Society of Uroradiology, Society of Computed Body Tomography, Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiology Departments, and the Michigan Radiological Society.

Dr. Dunnick received his M.D. degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York City. He was a resident in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester in New York, and completed his radiology residency at Stanford University School of Medicine in California. He has received numerous honors and awards throughout his career, including the 2006 ARRS gold medal. He was also named Best Doctor in America on six occasions.

Dr. Dunnick said his first goal as an RSNA Board member is to take time to investigate the many ways RSNA provides value to its members. "I would like to develop ways in which these member benefits can be enhanced and discover new programs that RSNA might offer to satisfy unmet needs," he said.
