A prolific leader and investigator, Dr. Becker is a professor in vascular and interventional radiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. He is also the executive director of the American Board of Radiology.
Born in Chicago, Dr. Becker is a 1977 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, where he completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in diagnostic radiology, becoming chief of the vascular section within a few years.
In 1990, Dr. Becker joined the Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute of Miami in Miami, Florida, as director of interventional radiology. In 1998 he was appointed assistant medical director and medical director of research and outcomes. He served 14 years at the Institute before moving to Washington, D.C., in June 2004 to accept the position as branch chief of image-guided intervention in the Cancer Imaging Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He served NCI for 18 months before relocating to Arizona.
Dr. Becker was founding editor of the Journal of Vascular & Interventional Radiology and was its editor-in-chief from 1990 to 1995. He has authored and co-authored nearly 200 articles, more than 175 abstracts, 36 book chapters, and a textbook. He has delivered more than 300 lectures and scientific presentations throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Central and South America. He was the Dotter Lecturer at the Society of Interventional Radiology’s 24th Annual Scientific Meeting. He has delivered presentations at two RSNA opening sessions, served on an Image Interpretation Session panel and delivered the RSNA 2000 Annual Oration in Diagnostic Radiology.
An active researcher and developer of transcatheter thrombolytic therapies, Dr. Becker holds patents for two metallic stents. He has been an investigator for numerous clinical trials in the field of vascular and interventional radiology. His clinical work in endografting of aortic aneurysms has included two principal investigatorships of IDE clinical trials of aortic endografts under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Becker has served on the SIR Research Committee and the Board of Directors of the Cardiovascular & Interventional Radiology Research and Education Foundation (CIRREF; now SIR Foundation). He was president of CIRREF from 1994 to 1997. In 1990, the SIR Foundation established the Gary J. Becker Young Investigator Award as a way to recognize promising young practitioners of interventional radiology early in their careers.
An RSNA member since 1979, Dr. Becker has been a member of the Refresher Course Committee, Public Information Advisory Board (now the Public Information Advisors Network) and the Planning Committee for the Office of Research Development. He has also served on a number of individual research development committees and was on the RSNA Research & Education (R&E) Foundation's Distinguished Roster of Grant Reviewers from 1994 to 1998.
As RSNA president, Dr. Becker hopes to continue his efforts to ensure the Society’s role as a leader in supporting new imaging technologies. "RSNA will play a crucial role in advancing the science of quantitative imaging," he said. "It is RSNA's duty to educate its members and the medical community at large in how to best use important new technologies, informatics and quantitative methods to benefit patients."
